What can I do to plan for my garden in February?

Spring is just around the corner, so it’s time to start getting your garden ready for spring!   Well, at least planning it, which is the start. February is the perfect month for this.   You’re basically stuck in the house, but ready for winter to end.

Gather all of your seed starting equipment—your lights, heat mats, sterile medium, and starter trays or pots—so you’ll be ready to go. Be sure to wash and sterilize with bleach or peroxide ( ensure that you rinse REALLY well)  before filling them with soil or germinating mix.

When starting seeds you need to think about what you wish to plant and where.  If you are growing vegetables you may want to think about getting bulk garden soil for raised beds.  Perennials come back every year, so you will need to decide on placement – you also have to take into consideration what sun and shade requirements your plants need to thrive and place accordingly.   Taller plants always towards the back.  We will get into this further in another article. One other thing to think about is how many plants do you have room for.  Always check the back of seed packages for spacing information.  Make your decisions on what you want to plant and what you want to grow for yourself.   If you haven't already ordered your seeds, now is the time to do so to ensure you get what you planned.

I have made a short list of plants to start seeding in February in Southern Ontario

  • broccoli
  • cauliflower,
  • eggplant,
  • cabbage,
  • onions,
  • celery,
  • parsley.

Perennial flowers as well as flowers and herbs like rosemary, snapdragons, and begonias can be sown inside by the end of the month. You can also try winter sowing – I will post an article on that soon.

By taking these steps in February, your garden will be ready to thrive when spring arrives!
