Yes, it is as simple as that. Well, there is a bit more to it - but there is no reason you can't put together your own planter just like the professionals.
There is one basic rule to follow when putting together a planter - and it's very simple to remember.....thriller, filler and spiller. Your thriller is your center plant and should be taller then everything else. Spikes, grasses, canna lilies are all good examples of your thriller. Keep the size of planter in mind when deciding this plant - canna lily will grow too big for a small planter, so spikes, geraniums would be a good subsitute. Your filler should size about half the height of your thriller - so geraniums, coleus, celosia, euphobia, lantana, verbena, swedish ivy etc make good fillers. Lastly you need spillers - these are the lovely plants that do just as the word states - spill over the sides of your planter. Wave petunias, million bells, biden, ivy and sweet potato vine all make lovely spillers.
Before you start, the main thing to remember is your colour scheme and to pick out plants that maintain that theme and compliment the surroundings where the planter is placed. This is a matter of personal taste - some people have a very formal approach to design and others like the bold chaos of colour. Just make sure to keep your colour scheme in mind when picking plants.
